Update - 4/3/19 9:48 a.m.

Sheldon ISD is also limiting all outside activities today until the odor dissipates. In addition, we are closing off outside air vents to prevent outside air from entering the campuses. Please note - this does not affect our air conditioning system...as they will continue to function properly.
These are just additional precautionary measures the district is taking to ensure the safety of our students and staff.
Thank you....

Earlier this morning, Sheldon ISD administrators placed Carroll Elementary, Garrett Elementary, and Null Middle School in a shelter in place for approximately 30 minutes as a precautionary measure because a gas-like odor was detected in the areas surrounding those campuses.
The local fire department was dispatched, and we are happy to report that all campuses were quickly cleared of any gas detection.
Sheldon ISD would like to thank the Sheldon Fire Department, Harris County Precinct 3 Constables, and SISD maintenance department personnel for their swift actions in helping resolve this situation by using gas-detecting instruments.

Update, 4/2/18 at 12:45 p.m.

Sheldon ISD administrators initially called a shelter in place out of an abundance of caution earlier this morning. Since then, the Harris County Sheriff’s office has declared a shelter in place within a one-mile radius of the fire in Crosby.

Since Sheldon ISD does not fall within this one-mile radius, the district is lifting its shelter in place. Sheldon ISD will continue to limit outside activities for the remainder of the school day. However, we are allowing parents to pick up their children from school early should they wish to do so. At this time, we are planning to dismiss students at normal dismissal times.

We will continue to monitor the conditions of the fire and will keep you updated with any additional information at a later time.

Reminder - Monday, March 25, is now an instructional day for students

Tomorrow - Monday, March 25 - has been changed to an instructional day for students.
Although Monday was originally scheduled as a Staff Development Day on the school year calendar, it is necessary that we make up one of the three instructional days that were lost because of last week’s chemical fire incidents in Deer Park.
As the overall safety and security of our students and staff remain our top priorities, we will continue to stay in close contact with the Harris County Health Department to ensure the air quality is safe.
Should conditions change, please continue to monitor our district website at www.sheldonisd.com or our social media pages for up-to-date information.
Again, students will be returning to school tomorrow, Monday, March 25.

Important Information from Sheldon ISD - Posted on 3/21/19 at 8:18 p.m.

Sheldon ISD administrators have decided to cancel school on Friday, March 22, which also includes all extracurricular and after-school events. Sheldon ISD continues to err on the side of caution because tomorrow’s air quality conditions could change at a moment’s notice – just like it did early this morning. The safety of our students and staff are far more important to us.

Also, please note that students will need to come to school on Monday, March 25. This was originally a Staff Development Day, but students are now being asked to come to school.

Again, there is no school on Friday, March 22…but students will need to come to school on Monday, March 25.

Please visit the Sheldon ISD website at www.sheldonisd.com or social media pages for the latest late-breaking information.

We would also like to take this opportunity to answer a few questions that were provided by many of you on our social media pages.

Will the district have to make up these missed days?
The district will file a waiver with Texas Commissioner of Education Mike Morath. Commissioner Morath will ultimately make that decision for us at a later date.

Monday, March 25, is a Staff Development Day on the school year calendar. Will students now have to attend school?
Yes, students will need to attend school on Monday, March 25. Please make arrangements since this was originally scheduled as a Staff Development Day on the Sheldon ISD 2018-19 School Year Calendar.

What about Friday’s athletic events?
Unfortunately, our athletic events will have to be rescheduled – including the Panther Relays Track Meet at Crenshaw Memorial Stadium. The Deer Park incident also affects other schools within our district. LaPorte High School, for example, is rescheduling its athletic events as well.

An Afternoon Update from Sheldon ISD

Sheldon ISD administrators would like to provide our community with an afternoon update on what we have learned so far since this morning’s press conference regarding abnormal air quality readings detected in the Deer Park area.

Superintendent King Davis participated in a conference call with other area superintendents before lunch today – and one additional conference call is also scheduled later this evening at 7:30 p.m.

Once district administrators have had ample time to collaborate with each other – as well as to speak with health professionals and air quality specialists – a decision about Friday’s instructional day should follow this evening’s conference call.

Also, thank you for your questions on social media – as they have been very informative and helpful. We hope to provide answers to many of your questions in our post later tonight which will include information such as athletic events, potential makeup day(s), and whether or not students will have to attend school on Monday (currently marked on the calendar as a Staff Development Day).

Lastly, if you have any additional questions that you would like to have answered, please feel free to leave them in the reply area below. Although we cannot guarantee every question will be answered – we will surely do our best to answer all of those that could have a potential impact on our students.
